Wines

Thistle Hill offers two types of wines.
We offer our wines made with organic grapes as well as our sustainably grown wines.
Thistle Hill recently merged with the neighbouring vineyard, called Erudgere. This vineyard is the site where the Roth family first planted vines back in 1890. The vines produce extremely high quality grapes which have been used over the years in some of Australia's best wines, including Rosemount Estate's flagship wine, Mountain Blue.
The merger means two pioneers, both highly regarded for their grapes and wines, will come together under the Thistle Hill name.
Erudgere's vines where certified in December 2012 and are now organic, they were in pre-conversion. However, we only use organic practices which is the most environmentally sustainable way to grow grapes. This is why the Erudgere wines are called 'sustainable' and Thistle Hill Wines are organic.
Why does organic growing make better wine?
There are no harmful chemicals used in the vineyard - no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, artificial fertilisers or synthetic fertilisers. (visit our "About Organics" for more detail on organic growing).
The grapes grow naturally, without chemical sprays, which means we need to give them a lot of care and attention. The result is more intense flavours and higher quality grapes. We use quality grapes so our wines are better tasting.
Organic Winemaking
Thistle Hill's new state of the art winery is organically certified and all our wines are 'organically certified wines.' This means we can't use artificial chemicals and must keep detailed records. Beyond that, the winemaking is a fairly natural process. Organic wines are made in a similar way to other wines minus a few inorganic additives. The main difference is organic wines contain much lower levels of preservatives than non-organic wines, which means we have to be extra careful to ensure the grapes and their juice are properly handled from crushing to bottling. Careful winemaking reduces dramatically the number of preservatives needed.
Visit our cellar door and taste wines made from organically grown grapes yourself. You will notice the difference! You'll also feel the difference. No chemicals in the wines means no headaches!
